A Ground Power Unit (GPU) and Power and Electrical Switch Gear is a type of ground support equipment (GSE) that is used to power a non-motorized aircraft while parked on the runway of an airport terminal, airfield or anywhere on the ground. UPPs, as previously stated, may be mobile or fixed, depending on the needs of the airport or airbase they serve. Those used for commercial airlines and comparable equipment are generally effective at low voltages; those used for army air bases and airpower facilities, however, are proving to be higher voltages that allow them to deal with any electrical problems that might arise.

Usually, ground power units are powered by batteries, although there are diesel-powered versions that are intended for heavy use (mainly in the military and airports with higher travel capabilities ). They could provide both a dC and an alternating current (AC); the former can be between 115 and 200 volts with a nominal frequency of 400 Hz, although the latter may be close to 28 V. aircraft they serve. Battery-powered GPUs are desired compared to diesel-powered variants because they are more efficient, more mobile and require less fuel and maintenance.
